Situated on the <a title=\"Seine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seine\">Seine<\/a> River, in the north of the country, it is in the centre of the <a title=\"\u00cele-de-France\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C3%8Ele-de-France\">\u00cele-de-France<\/a> <a title=\"Regions of France\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Regions_of_France\">region<\/a>, also known as the <i>r\u00e9gion parisienne<\/i>, \u00ab\u00a0Paris Region\u00a0\u00bb. The City of Paris has an area of 105.4 square kilometres (40.7 square miles) and had a population of 2,241,346 within its <a title=\"Thiers wall\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thiers_wall\">city limits<\/a> in 2014.<sup id=\"cite_ref-pop2013_2-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paris#cite_note-pop2013-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> The Paris Region covers 12,012 square kilometres (4,638 square miles), and has its own regional council and president. It had a population of 12,005,077 as of January 2014, or 18.2 percent of the population of France.<sup id=\"cite_ref-pop_6-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paris#cite_note-pop-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Paris was founded in the 3rd century BC by a <a title=\"Celts\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Celts\">Celtic people<\/a> called the <a title=\"Parisii (Gaul)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parisii_(Gaul)\">Parisii<\/a>, who gave the city its name. By the 12th century, Paris was the largest city in the western world, a prosperous trading centre, and the home of the <a title=\"University of Paris\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Paris\">University of Paris<\/a>, one of the first in Europe. In the 18th century, it was the centre stage for the <a title=\"French Revolution\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/French_Revolution\">French Revolution<\/a>, and became an important centre of finance, commerce, fashion, science, and the arts, a position it still retains today.<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Paris Region\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paris_Region\">Paris Region<\/a> had a <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"GDP\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/GDP\">GDP<\/a> of \u20ac624 billion (US $687 billion) in 2012, accounting for 30.0 percent of the GDP of France, and ranking it as one of the wealthiest five regions in Europe; it is the banking and financial centre of France, and contains the headquarters of 29 of the 31 companies in France ranked in the 2015 <a title=\"Fortune Global 500\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fortune_Global_500\">Fortune Global 500<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Paris is the home of the most visited <a title=\"Art museum\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Art_museum\">art museum<\/a> in the world, the <a title=\"Louvre\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louvre\">Louvre<\/a>, as well as the <a title=\"Mus\u00e9e d'Orsay\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mus%C3%A9e_d%27Orsay\">Mus\u00e9e d&rsquo;Orsay<\/a>, noted for its collection of French <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Impressionist\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Impressionist\">Impressionist<\/a> art, and the <a title=\"Mus\u00e9e National d'Art Moderne\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mus%C3%A9e_National_d%27Art_Moderne\">Mus\u00e9e National d&rsquo;Art Moderne<\/a>, a museum of modern and contemporary art. The notable architectural landmarks of Paris include <a title=\"Notre Dame de Paris\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Notre_Dame_de_Paris\">Notre Dame Cathedral<\/a> (12th century); the <a title=\"Sainte-Chapelle\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sainte-Chapelle\">Sainte-Chapelle<\/a> (13th century); the <a title=\"Eiffel Tower\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eiffel_Tower\">Eiffel Tower<\/a>(1889); and the <a title=\"Sacr\u00e9-C\u0153ur, Paris\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sacr%C3%A9-C%C5%93ur,_Paris\">Basilica of Sacr\u00e9-C\u0153ur<\/a> on <a title=\"Montmartre\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Montmartre\">Montmartre<\/a> (1914). In 2014 Paris received 22.4 million visitors, making it one of the world&rsquo;s top tourist destinations. Paris is also known for its fashion, particularly the twice-yearly <a title=\"Paris Fashion Week\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paris_Fashion_Week\">Paris Fashion Week<\/a>, and for its<i><a title=\"Haute cuisine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Haute_cuisine\">haute cuisine<\/a><\/i>, and three-star restaurants. Most of France&rsquo;s major universities and <i><a title=\"Grandes \u00e9coles\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grandes_%C3%A9coles\">grandes \u00e9coles<\/a><\/i> are located in Paris, as are France&rsquo;s major newspapers, including <i><a title=\"Le Monde\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Le_Monde\">Le Monde<\/a><\/i>, <i><a title=\"Le Figaro\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Le_Figaro\">Le Figaro<\/a><\/i>, and <i><a title=\"Lib\u00e9ration\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lib%C3%A9ration\">Lib\u00e9ration<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Paris is home to the <a title=\"Association football\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Association_football\">association football<\/a> club <a title=\"Paris Saint-Germain F.C.\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paris_Saint-Germain_F.C.\">Paris Saint-Germain<\/a> and the <a title=\"Rugby union\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rugby_union\">rugby union<\/a> club <a title=\"Stade Fran\u00e7ais\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stade_Fran%C3%A7ais\">Stade Fran\u00e7ais<\/a>. The 80,000-seat <a title=\"Stade de France\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stade_de_France\">Stade de France<\/a>, built for the <a title=\"1998 FIFA World Cup\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1998_FIFA_World_Cup\">1998 FIFA World Cup<\/a>, is located just north of Paris in the commune of <a title=\"Saint-Denis, Seine-Saint-Denis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint-Denis,_Seine-Saint-Denis\">Saint-Denis<\/a>. Paris hosts the annual<a title=\"French Open\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/French_Open\">French Open<\/a> <a title=\"Grand Slam (tennis)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grand_Slam_(tennis)\">Grand Slam<\/a> <a title=\"Tennis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tennis\">tennis<\/a> tournament on the red clay of <a title=\"Stade Roland Garros\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stade_Roland_Garros\">Roland Garros<\/a>. Paris played host to the <a title=\"1900 Summer Olympics\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1900_Summer_Olympics\">1900<\/a> and <a title=\"1924 Summer Olympics\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1924_Summer_Olympics\">1924 Summer Olympics<\/a>, the <a title=\"1938 FIFA World Cup\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1938_FIFA_World_Cup\">1938<\/a> and <a title=\"1998 FIFA World Cup\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1998_FIFA_World_Cup\">1998 FIFA World Cups<\/a>, and the <a title=\"2007 Rugby World Cup\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2007_Rugby_World_Cup\">2007 Rugby World Cup<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The city is a major rail, highway, and air-transport hub, served by the two international airports <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paris-Charles_de_Gaulle_Airport\">Paris-Charles de Gaulle<\/a> and <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Paris-Orly Airport\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paris-Orly_Airport\">Paris-Orly<\/a>.
